Vintage Lucidity
Objective:
Inspired by commercial artists Norman Rockwell and Edwin Georgi, this illustration was created as a beauty pin up that also had to incorporate fruit in someway. While being representative of the 1940s-1950s era (hence the “vintage” aesthetic), African American women were rarely ever depicted within this genre of commercial illustration. Therefore, this was the reason why they were chosen as the primary subject matter.
Meanwhile the fruit for this illustration was chosen specifically to reflect the ranges and flavors that black women exude. As a result, lemons, strawberries, and blackberries were the best candidates as they too embody the zest, sweetness, and obviously blackness that these women possess.
